November Summary: Navigating Social Media

30-11-2018

November has come and gone, time goes fast and we're quickly nearing the end of the year! This month's theme focused on navigating social media.

I wrote about some tips on how to curate your social media experience on sites like Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram so you can be sure you have a comfortable, safe experience online. Futhermore, Nastasia wrote about the benefits of social media, this time not necessarily focused on mental health but on other topics you might not have considered before.

Geert wrote an interesting blog about the different gaps in social support that social media can help us bridge, and also explained what the differences between bridging and bonding were all about. Finally, I wrote about both the benefits and dangers of seeking on mental health support in online social media communities. If you lookout for the pitfalls, there is a lot of good to be found online when you're seeking help from those in a similar situations.

In the midst of it all, our very own Hanneke was featured on the Dutch Jeugdjournaal, explaining the type of research we do and the type of games we are trying to develop here at the GEMH lab!

Thank you for joining us for the November theme month, and we hope you've gained some new insights in social media, the benefits and dangers and how to help curate your online experience!
