Disclaimer and Privacy Statement

v 0.2 November 2023

Detour is a game application (mobile app) that is offered through a partnership between Radboud University, University of Twente, and the Trimbos Institute. The procedures of Radboud University are leading in this game.

Scope of application

This statement must be read in conjunction with the general privacy statement from Radboud University, and the Microsoft Azure PlayFab Terms of Service. Radboud University respects your privacy and ensures that your personal data is processed in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. In this statement we inform you about how Radboud University handles your personal data, for what purposes and on what grounds this is done, how your personal data is processed, what rights you have when your personal data is processed and where you can go with questions or requests about your privacy.

Personal data

In this statement, the term Personal Data means all information with which a person can be directly or indirectly identified. This definition is in accordance with the GDPR.

Purposes of processing

Radboud University processes various personal data obtained by using this game. The data is collected with the aim of making the game functionally available to you. This allows you to:

  • log into the game
  • progress within the game
  • personalize the game based on your needs while quitting smoking
  • play with other game users

Which personal data

We understand the importance of safeguarding user privacy. For this reason, we only collect personal data after your explicit permission. The starting point for data collection is to record as little data as possible.

__|| Access ||__

You can only use the game if you participate in the associated study at Radboud University. When you register for the study, you will be assigned a Participant ID. You will need this Participant ID the first time you log into the game. Your personal data is linked to this ID and not to your name or other sensitive data.

When you log in for the first time, we also store the Device ID of your phone. This is a unique code that identifies your phone. We use this code to ensure that you can view your own data when you log in to the game again. The Device ID is stored encrypted and we do not collect any further data with it.

__|| Player data ||__

The first two weeks that you use the game you will answer questions about your smoking behavior and how you feel. You will also draw up a personal plan to quit smoking, with goals and strategies based on your motivation to quit. We store this data to personalize the game for you. We also track when you take actions in the game, such as generating AI art, playing levels, and challenging other players. We keep track of what actions you take, how often and when, and your results. The player data is not directly identifiable data. This data is used to personalize the game for you and to investigate whether the game is effective in helping you quit smoking.

When creating your personal plan to quit smoking, the game gives you options to choose from based on common motivations among peers. You can also enter your own goals. The player data becomes traceable if you enter identifying information in your personal goals, for example your name, age, or address, or that of people around you. We strongly advise against this. If you enter traceable information, it will be stored encrypted for as long as you participate in the study. We delete this information before we store the data for research purposes.

Personal data and third parties

The player data that is not directly traceable may possibly be sent to third non-commercial parties when they use this data (exclusively) for scientific research. Furthermore, we will not share data with others, unless there is a legal obligation from an authorized party.

We only share technical data with the Koontz Interactive company. Koontz Interactive developed Detour and helps us maintain the game. The technical data will only be shared with Koontz Interactive if this is really necessary for the technical maintenance of the game.

The game uses the PlayFab service based on Microsoft Azure to store data and enable collaborative play with other players. The data is stored in the EU.

The data is not used for marketing purposes.

Personal data and retention periods

We do not store personal data for longer than necessary. Because the game was developed for a scientific study, the personal data will be stored at Radboud University for 10 years.

How do we protect your personal data?

The processing of personal data naturally requires appropriate security measures. We secure the infrastructure using an SSL protocol that encrypts personal data and keeps the software up to date. We use Microsoft architecture and security to provide a safe and stable service. After you have participated in the study, the personal data will be deleted from the Microsoft server and stored in the Radboud University server environment in accordance with the security guidelines of Radboud University.
